Get SEO Right ASAP!

Search Engine Optimization(SEO), is a term thrown around a million times a day online and there is good reason for that. So many site owners believe if you build it, they will come. Sure you can drive traffic to your website by placing advertisements, banners, etc. in your brick and mortar store and it may be effective; but why not try to generate new business through the Internet instead of just preying on customers you already have. With this in mind, it is vital to realize even just the basics of SEO when you tackle your web design project. Starting with SEO in mind will save you time and money in the long run. That is why I have named this tutorial ?Get SEO right ASAP!?. This article is aimed for creating web design projects that stand out and get traffic. The basic techniques involved in SEO are simple and widely accepted by web designers and web design services (although not every designer always uses them properly):

1. Optimize the content on your site with a high percentage of text relevant to the search terms you intend to go after. This means knowing what people are searching for and then suppling them with content to match there needs.

2. Make sure all alt (alternate image tags) and title tags are included and that they have accurate descriptions including keywords and phrases. A lot of sites out there completely miss this point. You will see some sites that even have descriptions in the browser that say ?Untitled Document?. Don't let this point slip by as it is very easy to fix and doesn't take long. Again- base your meta tags and alt tags on the research done for your target market keywords.

3. Ensure your site meets or exceeds current online standards ensuring it can be viewed among all browsers and operating systems. You may find that some pages may still display correctly with incorrect HTML, but this can still hinder the way search engine bot will see your site and may effect the way the site is displayed when new browser versions become available.

4. Make sure all pages are under 800K (recommended for fast loading pages). There is no hard rule here but aim to get the pages as fast loading/smallest size possible without having it effect the quality of the site. If you have a very flash extensive site, or large images you might need to rethink the design to accomplish this.

5. Submit your site manually to all major search engines (google, msn, yahoo) and ?automatically? to lesser engines through search engine submission services (through free software like webceo). It is also important to submit your site to the major online directories like Dmoz as well as industry specific directories.

Keeping to these five rules when designing your web project will help you get better ranking and save you the hassles of implementing proper SEO to a site that is already finished. Building a good foundation of SEO to your web design project in the beginning stages will make your life a lot easier and get you results faster.
